Compositions (out of studio task week 5)

This was a task set to take four artists collages and create our own but similar interpretations whilst still keeping them similar to the original and documenting it at each stage.
Composition 1
This is the original source I based my work around.
I began by drawing a light bulb with a hard pencil as I feel it added some nice contrast to the background of the finished piece.
I then using a scalpel and metal ruler cut apart the photograph into tessellation mirroring my artists style.
I then began to stick them down methodically using pva considering contrast and placement as I did it.

These three are all images of the finished collage I feel the composition of it shows a good use of tone and contrast. however if I were to do it again I would use an image with a wider variety of tone and I would ensure that it was monochrome.

Composition 2
This is the source I selected for my second collage I hope to capture its essence and signature flare within my interoperation.
This was my initial plan for this collage including a rough idea of what media I will be planning to use.

I used a watered down acrylic to colour these sections of book pages as it gives a strong and vibrant colour but we can also still see the text underneath whilst still ensuring that the tones still resemble the image being interoperated into this collage.Once they had dried I cut them out ready to fix together.

Once I had cut these pieces out i overlapped them slightly and glued them together with pva ensuring they still looked like the image they are representing
This is what they looked like once they had been completely assembled and ready for me to begin work on the background for this collage.
I began the work on my background by fragmenting pages from and old practical plumbing book as I felt that the tones within the book had a lovely contrast with the diagrams within it along with the text.
Once I had fragmented all of the pages I required for my background I placed them down onto my page rearranging them constantly until I found a composition I was pleased with. then I glued them down carefully with pva trying to keep them with the contrast I found interesting.
This is the final outcome I feel happy with it but if I was to do this particular one again I would try to make my colours a bit stronger by watering them down less.

Composition 3
This is the image I have chosen to create an interpretation of
This is my initial plan of how I wished for this to look once completed.
I began by tearing all the edges of a couple of pages from the plumbing book as the pages had a lovely texture and will contrast with the other media I planned to use later on
I then tore some packing paper and placed that onto my page carefully considering contrast whilst I did it, I chose this media as I loved the colour of it and the texture it lends to the overall composition/collage.
Finally I used some old newspaper that was torn and placed onto the page to add yet more tone and contrast
I then glued them all down using pva once I had a composition that I was happy with.
I then wore small holes into my newspaper to create a more aged effect.

Then I drew on a part of an image I have shown in previous work in pencil first to ensure that I had the scale correct then I went over it with biro to make it stand out from my background using a cross hatching technique to create an array of tone and make it stand out more and catch the viewers eye.

This is the final image of this collage I feel it has a good range of contrast and is overall a good composition, however if I were to do it again I would use a wider range of media for the background maybe including some textiles and also do it landscape rather than portrait.

Composition 4
This was the initial source I attempted to interoperate
This is my initial plan for this collage including the words I plan to place within it.
I began by cutting coloured sheet music into 2 cm strips and then cutting 1.5 cm apart vertical incisions into the page from the plumbing book I have also used in previous collages, I then weaved them together to give it more contrast of tonal colour.
Then I used masking tape to hold the lock and key stencils I made in place whilst I added the colour.

I used a range of red yellow and white acrylic to create this colour, I got this effect by using a sponge and doing all of the colours straight after one another which got all of the tones to blend almost seamlessly together.
Once I had finished covering my page with colour and then letting it dry I removed the stencils to reveal a block of contrast to the vibrant reads left all over the rest of the page
Then using a fine tipped paintbrush I used a cream/red I had mixed up to create the lines across it then at the end of this dragging my brush up and down to give the lines a faded effect before I carefully added the small amount of black to create the contrast
After all of that on some packing paper I took some small stamps of each letter and put them together to crate this message, I used black ink to give this more contrast and I used the packing paper for its texture which contrasts with the flat texture of the backing.
I then drew on my illustrations with a pencil so that I could get a wide range of tones in and so that it blended better with the rest of the backing. I also used a biro to make them look like doodles of a person in love, these were placed in the key to show that love can be the key to time and with it you can unlock so much potential whilst creating so many passionate memories which can be seen through the use of red.
This is an image of the final piece before I used pva to stick it into my sketch book, I feel that it is a good collage however if I did this again I would use a different colour for a different colour and utilise a different form to give this piece a different more impacting impression on the viewer.
